No one could have imagined that the St. Patrick's Parade Corktown Races would become one of the largest 5km races in Michigan. Originally a 4 mile race that began in 1989, the race fluctuated between 700 and 1000 runners before Doug Kurtis and the Downtown Runners and Walkers took over operations in 2007. Since then the event has seen steady growth to over 6000 entrants. In 2010 the run and walk was combine to 5km which enable the race to stay almost completely on the Parade route.
Both the Fraternal Order of United Irishmen and the Motor City Striders have been a part of the organizing committee since its inception. In addition to attaching more people to the parade, the race is a vehicle for raising funds for the Saint Patrick's Senior Center.

Sterling Heights Kettlebell Class
Jun 6 2012 - 8:00am

If you’ve been driving by our Sterling Heights store around 8 am on certain Saturday mornings, you might have noticed a growing group of people in the parking lot, swinging these crazy looking weights and wondered what cult is taking up residence in Sterling Heights, don’t worry!  That’s our bi-weekly Kettlebell class that is being led by Sterling Heights store manager and certified personal trainer, Matt Hunter!
Kettlebells are also considered to be one of the most efficient calorie burners in modern exercise culture. “More muscles working – Means more muscles eating (burning fat)”, says Hunter. It is argued that the Kettlebell burns more calories that any traditional form of exercise.”
For those who would like to investigate for themselves, American Home Fitness of Sterling Heights (SW corner of Hall rd. and Schoenherr) offers a free Kettlebell-Camp that meets every 2 weeks during the summer and has been a real hit with it's guests. No purchase is required, and they have some Kettlebells for you to try and see how you like it. Hunter says, “The great part is that I know people over 60 years old and as young as 10 doing them.

If you are interested in attending one of their upcoming classes, please RSVP the store at 586-737-2601 or email Sterling@americanhomefitness.comto get yourself a mat and Kettlebell reserved.
